The second pillar of PROsport Racing, the classic department, which goes by the name of “PROsport Classic”, is still young. The reconstruction and subsequent sporting use of classic sports and racing cars is the focus of PROsport Classic. Already in 2021, the team was able to achieve a great success at the 24h Classic. Team boss Christoph Esser and Nico Verdonck finished the race, which traditionally takes place as part of the 24h race at the Nürburgring, in second position overall with a Group 4 Opel Kadett. The driver duo was able to leave many much stronger cars behind.
For 2022, PROsport Classic will receive support from 1986 DTM champion Kurt Thiim. Thiim will act as a consultant and bring all his experience to PROsport Classic. He will also compete in selected historic races with various historic racing cars for the team from Wiesemscheid. Among other things, he will drive a Volvo 240 Turbo, which competed in the 1986 European Touring Car Championship. Both in the DTM and in the European Touring Car Championship, the “Swedish coal crates” caused quite a stir.
There has been a long collaboration and friendship between Thiim and Christoph Esser. “Kurt was my teammate at Kissling Motorsport in the mid-1980s and we had a really awesome time here at the Nordschleife,” says team boss Esser, fondly recalling their time together. After PROsport Racing was founded in 2006, Thiim spent the first few years as an advisor to the newly founded team. In the process, he also occasionally took the wheel of cars from the Wiesemscheid-based racing team in the VLN. “At Nicki Thiim’s first race on the Nordschleife, he shared the cockpit with him. At that time, the two of them won the Seat Leon Supercopa Cup class outright,” continues Chris Esser.
